Welcome to our website

Little Downham has existed since time immemorial-much of its history is still visible today although the real history the lives of the people who live, or lived, there is inside our heads.  I decided to publish online my father's pages of memories which he wrote in the early eighties and which go back to the thirties.  Since then I have added the contributions of several local people as well as the diary pages of the parish magazine from the late 19th century.   Along with the many websites which contain information on many aspects of the village's life it is surprising just how much has been said about the "village on the hill".

I would be delighted if people from the village or their descendants would contact me and tell us about their memories of the village and life there.

Swimming

I have always been a strong advocate of teaching children to swim. Surrounded by water as we are in the fens, I am always amazed at the complacency of parents where swimming is concerned. I suppose it stemmed from the fact that the old generation never had the opportunity to learn and...

Playing field

School Lane extended to the playing field, as it does now. In those days it was called Cook's field. Just inside the gate was a pond. Shaped like a shin bone with a bulge at each end it ran from the gate to the stile near the allotments. About a hundred yards long it offered skating...

Shops
